First International Bicycle Week ![]()
From 20 to 24 April 2009 the I Semana Internacional da Bicicleta (First International Bicycle Week) took place in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil. It was organized by ViaCiclo and the Florianopolis's Institute of Urban Planning (Instituto de Planejamento Urbano de Florianopolis - IPUF). During the first part of the program, general topics such as public bikes, social projects and safe bicycle routes were discussed. This programming was coordinated by IPUF supported by other international partners, Movilization and Cities for Mobility. In the second part of the week, discussions focused on methods and technical infrastructure projects for the use of the bicycle. This formed the basis for a planning exercise on doubling the BR 282 highway that leads to the island of Santa Catarina. This program was (in) coordinated by ViaCiclo supported by BPP/I-CE. The event was opened by Vice-Mayor of Florianópolis, João Batista Nunes. Participants were researchers, technicians and representatives of international institutions. Around 90 people from various occupations in different Brazilian states participated. The First International Bicycle Week was important to maintain the level of discussion on the bicycle and it highlights Florianópolis status of being an important center for training cyclists.
